TO MAKE A GIFT THROUGH YOUR ESTATE - REMEMBER TO, FOR, 6 & 8.
By Dan Weintraub
If you would like to leave a bequest gift to the community through your will or estate plan, how should you do so? Clip and save this article to bring along when you have your will written or updated. You may ask your attorney to add into your will simple bequest language such as “I leave $______________ to Richmond Jewish Foundation.”
In the alternative you may use language such as “I give _________% of the residue of my estate to Richmond Jewish Foundation.” Either approach (specific amount or percentage) would work. If you would like the gift to be used for a specific purpose, remember “To, For, 6, 8.” What does that mean? Consider the examples below.
You may leave a gift of a certain dollar amount, or percentage TO Richmond Jewish Foundation, FOR something specific. What’s an example? Your gift could go for one of these 6 fields of interest: Jewish education, elderly, Israel, tolerance and community relations, arts and culture, or social services.
So, you might include the phrase “I give, bequeath, and devise $____________ to Richmond Jewish Foundation for a Jewish education field of interest fund.”
Perhaps, if you prefer, your gift could go for the benefit of one of the following 8 institutions: Jewish Family Services, Weinstein Jewish Community Center, Beth Sholom (Virginia Endowment of the Jewish Aged), Virginia Holocaust Museum, your favorite congregation, JCFR, Rudlin Torah Academy or for Richmond Jewish Foundation.
You could say “I give the greater of ________% of the residue of my estate or $__________ to Richmond Jewish Foundation to be used for the benefit of Jewish Family Services.” In the alternative your gift to Richmond Jewish Foundation could be for one of these 6 programs: scholarships; counseling; annual campaign; museum exhibits; rehabilitation services; or preschool reading readiness programs.
Maybe your contribution to Richmond Jewish Foundation could be for one of these 8 existing funds: Rachel Banks Youth Fund; November Opportunity Fund; Ladin Fund for Beth Sholom; Rudlin Torah Academy Endowment Fund; Arenstein Youth Enrichment Fund; Evans Emergency Nutrition Fund; Ipson Holocaust Education Fund or the Sisisky Passport to Israel Fund.
These are a few examples of the many worthy existing funds, a list of which is available from the Foundation.
You could also make a gift to Richmond Jewish Foundation for a designated purpose during your life. The Foundation accepts these 6 assets: cash, securities (stocks or bonds), real estate, life insurance, retirement plans, mutual funds or IRAs.
Your gift to Richmond Jewish Foundation for something special could be in the form of one of these 8 vehicles: Unrestricted Gift; Field of Interest Fund; Special Purpose Fund; Charitable Gift Annuity; Charitable Remainder Trust; Donor Advised Fund; Supporting Foundation or as the beneficiary of a Charitable Lead Trust.
We hope you will let us know if you have named Richmond Jewish Foundation in your will so that we can say thank you.
